ACT My Answer Key: Help Students Turn Their Scores Into a Plan

There’s seeing your ACT score, and then there’s understanding what happened behind the score.

With ACT My Answer Key, students can revisit the test they took, see their responses and the correct answers, and get a closer look at where they did well and where they may have room to grow.

For a student thinking about taking the ACT again, that information can be valuable. Instead of saying, “I guess I need to study more,” they can start asking a much better question:

“What should I work on next?”

That’s where counselors can help.

A Score Is Just the Starting Point

ACT My Answer Key gives students more information about their performance on eligible ACT test dates. Students receive:

  • A copy of the test questions
  • Their answers
  • The correct answers
  • The score conversion table

Together, those pieces can help students look beyond the number on their score report.

Maybe a student struggled with a certain type of math question. Maybe they knew the content but rushed near the end of a section. Maybe several missed questions came down to reading too quickly.

Seeing the actual questions and responses gives students a chance to notice those patterns.

For counselors, My Answer Key can also make conversations about retesting more specific. Instead of focusing only on whether a student wants a higher score, you can help them think about what they would do differently before their next test.

Spot the Pattern. Make a Plan.

Simply looking at the correct answers is not enough. Encourage students to spend some time with their My Answer Key materials and think about why they missed each question.

One simple approach is to sort missed questions into four categories:

Content: I didn’t know how to answer this.

Strategy: I knew the content, but I approached the question incorrectly.

Pacing: I rushed, guessed, or ran out of time.

Careless error: I knew this, but I misread the question or made a mistake.

Students do not need a complicated spreadsheet or tracking system. Even a few notes can help reveal where they should focus.

If most of the missed questions point to content, the student may need additional practice in a specific skill area. If pacing shows up repeatedly, timed practice may be more useful. If a student discovers that they actually knew how to answer many of the questions they missed, their preparation plan may look different altogether.

The goal is not necessarily to study more. It is to study with a purpose.

Who Should Consider My Answer Key?

Not every student will have the same testing plan, but My Answer Key may be especially helpful for students who:

  • Plan to take the ACT again
  • Want to better understand their current score
  • Are unsure where to focus their preparation
  • Have a college, scholarship, or personal score goal they are working toward
  • Want to use their previous testing experience to guide their next steps

It can also be useful for students who are not yet sure whether they want to test again. Reviewing their performance may give them more information to consider as they make that decision.

Mark These ACT Test Dates

For the 2026–2027 testing year, My Answer Key is available for the following ACT National test dates:

ACT Test Date My Answer Key Order Deadline
October 17, 2026 April 17, 2027
December 12, 2026 June 13, 2027
April 10, 2027 October 10, 2027
June 12, 2027 December 12, 2027

Consider including My Answer Key in your ACT reminders before these test dates. A quick mention in a student meeting, family newsletter, registration reminder, or testing presentation can help students know about the option before they test.

How Do Students Order My Answer Key?

Students can order My Answer Key through MyACT.

Before the test: Students can add My Answer Key when they register for an eligible ACT test date.

After the test: Students who tested on an eligible date can still order My Answer Key through MyACT as long as they order by the deadline for that administration.

There is another important detail for counselors to share: Students who register for the ACT with a fee waiver can add My Answer Key to an eligible registration at no additional cost.

That is worth mentioning when you distribute fee waivers or help eligible students register. Students may not know the resource is available to them unless someone points it out.

Put My Answer Key to Work

Once students receive their materials, consider using a few questions to guide the conversation:

  • What did you notice about the questions you missed?
  • Do you see any patterns?
  • Was content, strategy, pacing, or something else the biggest challenge?
  • What is one thing you would do differently next time?
  • What should you focus on before another ACT test date?

These do not have to become lengthy counseling sessions. A few focused questions can help a student move from “I want a better score” to “Here’s what I’m going to work on.”

That is ultimately where My Answer Key can be most useful.

Students already put time and effort into taking the ACT. My Answer Key gives them an opportunity to learn from that experience and use what they discover to make a more informed plan for what comes next.
