Recently Education Weekly published on career and technical education. Alerting the education community that CTE is changing for the better and for some students, school counselors are noticing the “career” comes before the “college” in college and career education.
School counselors have long known that college, or college “right now” may not be for everyone; and as we continue to advocate for those students who might want to take a different path, regardless of if they are in advanced or alterative courses there is great information out there that can set your students up for success and provide you the structure you need to help them make informed decisions.
One place to start is with O*Net OnLine created by the U.S. Department of Labor. It is a great site to bookmark and put in your school counselor’s toolbox. What makes it even simpler for you is that ACT has already created readymade Industry Sector Readiness Profiles for students and their stakeholders, that are cross walked with WorkKeys assessment results and information from O*Net. Making it super easy to tie the two together.
Another cool feature by ACT that can help school counselors is the Occupational Profile Search. This tool allows students to research jobs by Job Title/Code, Career Cluster and Job Description. You can find more information about the 16 Career Clusters at Advance CTE.
Whichever career path your students want to take, school counselors can assist their students with easy to find resources and information that make the path possible.
