Prioritizing Mental Wellness: A Reminder for Counselors

Written by ACT | May 6, 2025 2:46:32 PM

As high school counselors, we pour our energy into supporting students, guiding them through academic pressures, personal challenges and postsecondary planning. In the midst of caring for others, how often do we check in on our own mental wellness?

Burnout is REAL, and it doesn’t just affect us—it impacts the quality of support we provide. Prioritizing mental wellness isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Simple strategies like setting boundaries, taking mindful breaks and leaning on a support network can make a difference. Remember, we can’t pour from an empty cup!

Here are a few simple strategies to help protect your well-being:

  • Set boundaries – Protect your personal time and avoid overextending yourself.
  • Take mindful breaks – Even a few minutes of deep breathing or a short walk can reset your mind.
  • Lean on a support network – Connect with colleagues who understand the demands of the job.
  • Prioritize rest – Quality sleep is essential for emotional resilience and decision-making.
  • Celebrate small wins – Acknowledge the impact you’re making, even in small ways.
  • Engage in activities that recharge you – Whether it’s reading, exercising, meditating, or enjoying a hobby, find something that fills your cup.
  • Seek professional support if needed – Therapy or counseling isn’t just for students; sometimes, we need a listening ear too.

This week, take a moment to pause and reflect: What small step can you take today to nurture your own well-being? Your students deserve a healthy, balanced counselor and so do you.
